I started this piece when I was still focused on the idea of chaos, the thought that one day the world would end, but instead of being terrified, there could be some light found in it.
My plan for this piece was to show a world overflown with water, a scary dark scene that could possibly be the future for our world. However I wanted to show how some people have adapted to this new environment and even how they thrive in it. I planned to show this by creating boats in the water that make it look like people are surviving. I wanted to put 'water world' on one of the boats showing someone's possible humor towards the bizarre situation.
I originally planned to do this piece as an oil painting on canvas, however that soon became impossible due to COVID-19, so I settled on using my graphics tablet.
This piece was actually a lot of fun to make, I learnt a lot about layering and shaping using my tablet as well as the use of light.
I tried to distance myself from any light colors when painting this piece as I wanted to make the lightning the brightest thing you can see.
I'm really proud of my use of reflections on areas like the boats, however, I know I could do better with the reflections off the water. If I was to continue this piece, I would research more into how lightning reacts to water.
As well I would like to add more buildings into the background to make the image more exciting. My realism could also use a bit of development as right now it kind of looks like one of those Christian comics you receive from Jehovah's witnesses and I don't know how I feel about that.
However I do like the atmosphere I have created, the darkness blended into that bright electric blue really makes the image pop. I definitely will have to experiment with brighter colors in the future, especially against darker backgrounds.
